Title: "Manifold Mirrors: Mathematics in Rule-driven Art" / Dr. Felipe Cucker, Chair Professor, Applied Mathematics, the City University of Hong Kong
Abstract:
"A number of art works, but certainly not all of them, are created within the strictures of constraints that need to be respected and, occasionally, these constraints have a mathematical form.
Our talk focuses in a particular class of such mathematical constraints and the rule-driven art that was created in relation to this class. We expect to show these rules showing up in plastic arts, music and literature and to give an idea of both their role in art creation and their limitations. We do not assume any mathematical knowledge from the audience beyond high school geometry." (F. Cucker)

KINEMATOGRAPH
A sharing session with Hector Rodriguez on generative art.
 |
KINEMATOGRAPH is an experimental artistic research project that applies fundamental concepts of information theory to the generation of abstract digital images and sounds. This presentation will discuss the basic concepts of this project in informal, non-technical terms. We will begin by describing the main characteristics of generative art and informational aesthetics. We will then consider the meaning of experimentation as a mode of artistic creation. To illustrate the practical aspects of experimentation, we will briefly explain the technique of Huffman encoding and its application in the Kinematograph project. The session will conclude with a discussion of the potentials and problems of this line of research.
The material discussed here will be presented at the 11th Generative Art Conference in Milan, Italy, December 16-18, 2008. |
